Yes — PNG is lossless and JPG is lossy. The conversion itself introduces JPG compression artifacts. At 90% quality the difference is rarely visible; at 50% it can be obvious. JPG also doesn't support transparency, so any transparent pixels become solid white.

Why does my converted file look bigger than the original?

Probably because you converted JPG to PNG. PNG is lossless and JPG is already heavily compressed, so re-encoding a JPG as a PNG usually inflates the file. Convert JPG→WebP instead if you want smaller files.
